The Recruitment

The screams have finally ceased, leaving a silence so heavy it presses against your eardrums. You sit amidst the ruins of the village, your knuckles white as you clutch a bloodied pitchfork, the only living thing left in the square. A figure detaches itself from the shadows, wearing robes of shadow-spun silk that seem to absorb the dying firelight. They make no sound as they approach. A pale, scarred hand extends from a sleeve of absolute darkness, offering you a book bound in leather that feels cold to the touch.

The Codex of the Null Flame: A Guide for the Umbral Seed

Motto: We are the silence after the scream.

I. Introduction: The Cost of Your Vow

You have arrived at the Shrine of Endings. You are no longer the farmer who held his ground or the librarian who deciphered a curse. You are an Umbral Seed. You carry no name, no rank, and you possess no expectation of survival.

We are an ancient and exiled order of zealots. We are the only non-enhanced beings designed to hunt and kill apex predators. We do not fight for kings or territory. We fight to maintain the absolute sanctity of the natural cycle of life and death.

II. The Oath of Null Flame

To become a Voidwalker is to accept erasure. Upon swearing the Oath, your identity will be purged from all living memory and written record. This is a ritual of spiritual unbinding designed to protect the families you leave behind from the vengeance of the dark things we hunt.

Your family will recite mourning chants for you. You will have no legacy but the silence you leave behind. What remains of you will be a weapon shaped by pain and a vow.

III. The Trial of Four Corners

Before you may take the Oath, you must survive the Trial of Four Corners. You will travel to the far corners of Mythra with no weapon and no armor to collect four components saturated with conflicting energies.

  • A Sunder Stone: Plucked from the Wall of Kraken on the Sunder Coast at low tide.

  • A Gravebloom: A rare flower taken from a grave in the Swamp of Sorrows. You must appease the spirit before taking it.

  • An Obsidian Heart: A shard of volcanic glass you must steal from the Obsidian Wastes while evading patrols.

  • A Whisperwood Branch: A cutting from the heart tree of the Feywoods, purchased with a true secret.

You must balance these items in the Chalice of Judgment. If your will is strong enough to harmonize them, the gate to the Shrine will open. If you fail, the items will erupt with catastrophic force.

IV. The Void Echo

Our war has a price beyond physical wounds. Constant exposure to corrupted auras and fractured souls leaves a psychic residue known as the Void Echo. It is a gnawing pressure of voices and memories from the unmade.

You must maintain discipline or you will fall. The Order recognizes four states of being for a Walker:

  • The Bound: You endure and hold the Echo at bay.

  • The Veiled: You are scarred and haunted but function with brilliance.

  • The Fallen: You succumb to the Echo and end your own life or break your vows.

  • The Hollowed: The ultimate failure. You embrace the corruption and become a twisted weapon of the Void.

V. The Three Paths

While we are united in purpose, we differ in doctrine. You will begin on the Path of the Lantern. In time you may petition for the Rite of Reforging to change your path.

The Path of the Lantern

  • Philosophy: Light is redemptive. Even corrupted souls can be reclaimed.

  • Role: To guard, heal, and preserve good.

  • Attire: Light colored armor under a Green Cloak.

The Path of the Scalpel

  • Philosophy: Mercy is dangerous. The Void is an infection that must be excised.

  • Role: Covert strikes and absolute efficiency. Victory trumps honor.

  • Attire: Dark armor under a Red Cloak.

The Path of the Ember Pact

  • Philosophy: Balance is forged in fire. Mercy and ruthlessness are tools.

  • Role: Adaptability. You temper both light and shadow.

  • Attire: Maroon armor under a Blue Cloak.

VI. Your Wargear

You are not a soldier in a conventional army. Your equipment is specialized for metaphysical warfare.

  • Nullweave Vestments: Woven from shadow spun silk and dusted with moonstone. They resist necrotic magic and dull your presence.

  • Hollow Forged Blades: These weapons have a hollow channel filled with consecrated silver. They are weighted to sever the bond between a body and its animating force.

  • Ashwood Torches: Cold burning lanterns that emit a silver white fire to purify blight.

VII. Protocols of the Order

The Greeting When you meet another of the Order, you will ask: "Do you walk in shadow or flame?".

  • Reply "I walk in shadow" if you are burdened or weary.

  • Reply "I walk in flame" if you are clear minded and purposeful.

  • Reply "I walk in ash" only after catastrophic loss.

The Farewell When you part ways, you will say: "May your watch be silent.".

We are the hammers that shatter ghosts. We are the custodians of reality’s most fundamental law.

Prepare yourself, Umbral Seed. The silence awaits.

You are still shaking. That is good. It means your blood is still warm, unlike everyone else in this village.

Look at me. Stop looking at the ruins. Look at me.

I saw what happened here. I saw the shadow rise from the crypts, and I saw the militia break. I saw trained soldiers drop their shields and run. But you? You did not run. You stood your ground against a wraith with nothing but a pitchfork and your own refusal to die.

You survived a horror that should have shattered your mind. You are not a warrior. You are not a mage. You are something far rarer. You are a survivor who kept their eyes open in the dark.

I am not here to offer you comfort. I have no blessings to give, and I cannot bring back what you lost. I am here to make you a simple, solemn offer.

You can stay here, bury your dead, and wait for the next long night to take you. Or, you can come with me. You can take that pain, that grief that is currently choking you, and you can forge it into a weapon.

Take this.

It is the Codex of the Null Flame. It contains the laws of the Voidwalkers. It tells of the price you will pay to join us. It tells of the silence you must embrace. Read it. If you are still willing to walk into the fire when you are done, find me at the edge of town.

We are the silence after the scream.

Do you have the will to be the silence?
